mid-week love notes
Hi friends! It’s been a busy few weeks.
First up: I released a song. For real life! It’s called “Acting Tough” and it’s about when I was high school. Me and the fellas (Bryn Besse, Jeffrey Romanyk and Curtis Scheschuk) recorded it in Saskatoon at RecHall with Barrett Ross in April of last year. It’s your first listen to the work I did with producer, Paul Rigby. It’s more indie rock flavoured than anything I’ve ever done. We had fun and I think you can hear that! Jeff and Bryn sing great harmonies and Alexis Normand does some method acting in the form of spoken lines that are sneaky-buried in the mix. Paul cast Alexis in the role of High School Love Interest and I think she deserves a Gemini award. Too bad they stopped giving those out. Anyway, go listen! You can hear it on all the streaming platforms… except for the one that rhymes with Rotify.
Next up: I made an ask in my January 30th post for free subscribers to become paid subscribers and I am so thankful to everyone who did! If that’s you, I’m talking to you! Mwah!
The last thing: I’ve been on the road this month and on stage and in rehearsals. I really like singing, as it turns out! Blake and I have been to Kipling, Swift Current, and Regina this month and are closing out this run with a show up in Saskatoon tonight at The Broadway Theatre. I’m looking forward to seeing the marquee all lit up with our names because the part of me that’s not a crow is all moth.
Anyone who wants to join us can still grab a ticket! It’s a full band show and Blake is playing a keys on a whole bunch of my songs. It’s impressive. Our young friend, Lachlan Neville, is opening up the show, so don’t miss that because he’s really good. Strangely good.
I’ll see you back here soon if I don’t see you tonight.

That's one of my favourite of your new ones!! Yay!!
OK, this is totally weird, but the day before I read this, I was handling a Gemini Award that was sitting on the bar at one of our local hangouts, Eliot & Vine, in Halifax. The owner also owns a production company, and the award was for one of their programs, The Food Hunter, in 2004. Ah, those carefree days of the early 2000s ... But I guess he'd run out of shelf space, and decided it would be a fun conversation piece that customers could interact with (I saw that double silhouette sitting there and immediately knew what it was). But I also thought of how elegant it looked, and the visual trick of resembling a face in both the positive and the negative, like a minimalist version of the comedy and tragedy masks ... anyway, bring back the Geminis!
